Please Believe In Yourself

January 19, 2015

One of my personal all-time favorite movies, the Wizard of Oz, is also one of the greatest movies of all-time.

The scarecrow, tin man, and lion are like my own friends.

The scarecrow wanted a brain.  The tin man wanted a heart.  The lion wanted courage.

But the wizard never really gave them what they wanted…because they already had those things inside of them.  They just didn’t know it.

“But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t, didn’t already have” – Dewey Bunnell, America( the band )

I AM the scarecrow.  I have a brain.  I don’t always use it, but I have one.  I’ve used it in school to advance in understanding and to earn a Masters degree, an outward documentary sign of what was already inside of me.  My brain was challenged and tested along the way, but better for the growth it went through to achieve it.  And my brain has been tested in life since. And if there is one thing that I’ve learned in all my education, it’s that I still have a lot to learn. Learning is a lifetime endeavor, and there is so much to learn.

I AM the tin man. I have heart.  At times I may not act so lovingly.  But for the most part I have a deep supply of emotion, empathy and love. Sometimes I wish I didn’t.  It hurts to love sometimes.  But when I think of the alternative of not having a heart, I’m moved with passion and thanks that I have a heart to love.  Sometimes its a battle to try to keep it.  But it’s a gift worth fighting for.

I AM the lion.  I have courage.  At times I may not act so courageously.  Sometimes I’m afraid.  Sometimes I’m frozen with fear. But God sends me faith and His Spirit to handle most every situation I’m faced with. Every day I wake to new challenges and need courage to face them.  I find it inside of me and use it to face the new day as best I can.

And you are these lovable characters, and have these gifts too.

Many of the things we long for, are already inside of us.  They are just waiting to manifest themselves with opportunities in life.

I wanted to be a writer.  So I write.  And I’m a writer.

I wanted to be a cartoonist.  So I make comics (Ed Novick Comics).  And I’m a cartoonist.

I wanted to be a father.  I had that inside of me.  Now I am.  I need the brains, heart and courage that are also inside of me to do the best job I can of that too.  Thank God I have them.

You can be what you want to be too.

What do you long for?  What do you long to be?

Can it be that you are already those things because they are in you, and you just need to have experiences that drawn those things from within you and manifest them?

Don’t be afraid of your dreams.  Go for them.  Do something to work toward them and manifest them today.

God will be with you.  He already is.

“Why, anybody can have a brain. That’s a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven’t got: a diploma.  Therefore, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Universitatus Committeeatum e plurbis unum, I hereby confer upon you the honorary degree of Th.D. – that’s Dr. of Thinkology.”  – Wizard of Oz to Scarecrow

“As for you, my fine friend — you’re a victim of disorganized thinking. You are under the unfortunate delusion that simply because you run away from danger, you have no courage. You’re confusing courage with wisdom. Back where I come from, we have men who are called heroes. Once a year, they take their fortitude out of mothballs and parade it down the main street of the city. And they have no more courage than you have. But! They have one thing that you haven’t got! A medal! Therefore — for meritorious…. conduct, extraordinary valor, conspicuous bravery against wicked witches, I award you the Triple Cross.” – Wizard of Oz to Lion

“As for you, my galvanized friend, you want a heart! You don’t know how lucky you are not to have one. Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable. I could have been a world figure, a power among men, a – a successful wizard, had I not been obstructed by a heart….back where I come from there are men who do nothing all day but good deeds. They are called phil…er — er — phil — er, yes…good-deed-doers. And their hearts are no bigger than yours. But! They have one thing you haven’t got! A testimonial! Therefore, in consideration of your kindness, I take pleasure at this time in presenting you with a small token of our esteem and affection. And remember, my sentimental friend…that a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” – Wizard of Oz to Tin Man
