Ode To Mankind

December 3, 2014

This is a poem I wrote most of in college, but it lay in an unfinished draft for years until today when I found it,  finished it and published it here.

Up at dawn, I don my white collar,

In pursuit of the almighty dollar.

Of money and profits I’ve become quite a scholar

‘Til conscience and soul bid me let out a holler.

Living my days as an economic unit

Competition’s my foe who I’m tasked to outwit

Living the life of an old hypocrite

Futile and small next to the infinite.

Half of my life spent to get a diploma.

The next 50 years walking round in a coma

(So long as I can avoid carcinoma.)

My mind called back by a putrid aroma.

Bums in the streets – people living as vagrants!

Emiting a stench, a sick putrid fragrance.

Forgiving the rest their selfishness and flagrance,

Starving and cold, they can’t afford to pay rents.

Broken and battered, society’s abused

Needing, most of all, their Spirits transfused.

Lazy and worthless – so they’ve been accused.

More rightly, they’ve been economically ill-used.

For so long have we been ignorant and blind.

There must be some solution – some answer to find.

Why can’t we see that we’re all intertwined

In some greater good known to all as mankind?
