No More Saturday Morning Cartoons?!?!?

October 7, 2014

Did you miss it?

This past Saturday was the first Saturday in America in over 50 years with no Saturday morning cartoons.

That’s right.  You read that right.  No more Saturday morning cartoons.

NBC stopped Saturday morning cartoons in 1992. CBS stopped them soon after that.  ABC stopped them in 2004.  The CW was the last holdout and they stopped this week.

For the first time in over 50 years, no Saturday morning cartoons.

What killed Saturday morning cartoons?

Cable TV and the FCC.  In the 1990’s the FCC began more strictly enforcing its rule requiring broadcast networks to provide a minimum of three hours of “educational” programming every week. Networks afraid of messing with their prime-time slots found it easiest to cram this required programming in the weekend morning slot.  And cartoons are widely available on cable stations that are not subject to the same FCC requirement.

My generation is in shock.  We can’t imagine what our childhood would have been without the Saturday morning routine of waking, turning on the TV, and watching hours of cartoon, after cartoon, after cartoon hyped up on sugary cereal in an animation frenzy. The biggest problem we had on Saturday morning’s was which station to turn into for the cartoons we wanted to see.

Some of my favorites were Super Friends, Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner, Underdog, George of the Jungle, Secret Squirrel, Woody Woodpecker, Pink Panther, Johnny Quest, Scooby Doo, Batfink, Fat Albert, The Jetsons and, of course, Schoolhouse Rock.  There was also Josie and the Pussycats, Yogi Bear, Casper The Friendly Ghost and dozens of others over the years.

What will the next generation do without this beloved routine?

Will they get the mental development they need to survive in this world?

How will they learn to solve problems if they don’t have Scooby Doo and the gang teaching them how to solve mysteries?

How will they learn how to be heroic without Super Friends to show them how to fight evil?

How will they learn the Preamble to the Constitution to pass their Constitution exam in grade school if they don’t have Schoolhouse Rock to teach them?

How will they learn how to stay safe from aliens and dinosaurs without Land of the Lost?

Scratch that last question.  I forgot that Land of the Lost was live action, not a cartoon, and that dinosaurs are extinct.

Well….now Saturday morning cartoons are extinct too.

For those of you still in shock, don’t worry too much …. various cable stations offer cartoons all day long, every day of the week, so while the quality of the cartoons may not be as good as the ones we watched back in the good old days, there are still lots of cartoons around, pretty much whenever you want them … which may even be better than we were kids.

What were your favorite Saturday morning cartoons?  Answer in the comments section below.

I gotta go … Spongebob Squarepants is coming on … then I need to work on developing my own cartoons for the next generation with Eman Comics.
