Baseball Dream Team

June 8, 2014

I love baseball.  I love baseball history.

I have followed Major League baseball since I was a kid collecting baseball cards which I still have.

Everyone who follows baseball has their favorite players.

I recently got a free account at WhatIfSports.com and assembled my All-Time MLB Dream Team.  I created a team of 30 players – 18 position players and 12 pitchers.   I selected 2 players for each infield position and 8 outfielders.  I selected 8 starting pitchers and 4 relief/save artists.

My Dream Team is shown below along with their positions and significant stats from one of their best years.  The first section is my starting lineup of players, followed by the bench, followed by pitchers.   My starting pitcher would have to be Walter Johnson, who would bat at the bottom of the order, unless we had a DH, in which case I’d have to DH Barry Bonds or Hank Aaron, and hit either of them in the cleanup spot (4th).

Pos Starter Bats AVG HR RBI Field/Range
SS 1901 Honus Wagner R 0.353 6 126 C-/A+

There were many other players who I’d love to have, but were omitted when I had to make cuts.  Some of these include: Pete Rose, Grover Alexander, Joe Jackson, Tris Speaker, Warren Spahn, Lefty Grove, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Ken Griffey Jr., Frank Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Eddie Murray, Willie McCovey, Frank Thomas, Ernie Banks, Cal Ripken Jr., Jimmie Foxx, Eddie Collins, Bob Gibson, George Sisler, Tony Gwynn, Rod Carew, Joe Morgan, Ivan Rodriguez and Carlton Fisk.  Any of these are deserving, as are many, many others I have not mentioned here.

I didn’t weigh scandals of steroid use, gambling or tampering in my decisions – just play on the field and lifetime statistics.  I realize steroids could effect lifetime stats, but steroids don’t hit baseballs, and anyone who saw  these players play on the field would have to recognize their baseball greatness.

Maybe you have your own opinion of who you’d select for your team?

If so, feel free to list your team or mention other players in the Comments section below.

Play ball!
