My Good Hot Shower

May 18, 2014

Today as I took my morning shower something was different. I didn’t just see my shower. I saw and experienced something more.

Yes, the water was warm, soothing and cleansing like so many times before.

But today I saw and pondered the details.

I saw the faucet wrought of medal long ago by a machinist.

I saw tile installed careful by a skillful tradesman.

I felt water routed to my home by a plumber.

I experienced comforts of home sold by a realtor.

I saw light filtering through a smoked glass window and emanating from light bulbs both of which were sold by merchants.

I felt the warmth of heated water in a heated room thanks to natural gas supplied by gas company workers and heated through furnace and water heater utilities designed by engineers and installed by knowledgable heating and air conditioning professionals.

I experienced comforts created by God and brought to me courtesy of hundreds of persons of the past, either still living or deceased, who cared enough to get up and go to work every day so that me and many others might enjoy similar comforts of living. I wondered what motivated them, imagined it to be more than just money, and possibly a realization that they were doing good work in using the knowledge and skills they were gifted with to bring about a better world, and possibly to give glory to a God they loved.

I felt humbled.

I’m not currently employed as I write this. I don’t have the skills and knowledge of those men and women who brought me today’s shower comforts.

But I do have other skills and knowledge that I would love to employ to help others in some way and meet some future human needs.

So today, I thank God for all those men and women who cared enough to work over the years who contributed to all the elements that brought me today’s good hot shower. I praise Him for the gifts that each of us are given, and for the spirit of love that he put in each of us to use those gifts to love and care for one another. And I petition for an opportunity to put my unique gifts to work so that I may give Him glory in my work and share His love with others.

And I start by writing and posting this blog story about my good hot shower. Amen.

It’s so important to appreciate the details. Thanks for reminding us. I, probably like 99% of the population never give thought to those whose hard work allow us the creature comforts we enjoy. Good luck with your job search. I hope God answers your prayers for the opportunity to contribute your gifts to others.
