They’re not in?!?! (Chicago, and Other Rock and Roll HOF Snubs)

May 7, 2014

I love music.  I love rock and roll.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is designed to capture its best.

But I’m not going there until my favorite band, Chicago (aka Chicago Transit Authority) gets inducted.  In my mind it’s not a true rock HOF without them.

Chicago is second to only The Beach Boys in Billboard singles and albums chart success among American bands, and these two great bands are behind only The Beatles and Rolling Stones among all bands.

Chicago is one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups in history.  They have been playing together and producing music for nearly 5 decades – I went to their concert last year (2013) and they sounded AWESOME playing hit after hit.  Chicago’s horn-infused rock possesses a unique sound which has stood the test of time and will be played and influence other artists for many years to come.

According to Billboard, Chicago was the leading US singles charting group during the 1970s. They have sold over 38 million units in the US, with 22 gold , 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums. Over the course of their career they have had five number-one albums and 21 top-ten singles.

With this kind of success, how is Chicago NOT in the Rock and Roll HOF?

Chicago is not the only Rock and Roll Hall of Fame omission that is greatly disappointing.  Chicago is at the top of my list, but below in no particular order (although some of my favorites are near the beginning) are among my top 50 notable omissions:

Chicago, Journey, The Doobie Brothers, Todd Rundgren, Thin Lizzy, The Guess Who, Jethro Tull, Billy Squier, Def Leppard, Boston, Boz Scaggs, Bill Withers, Grand Funk Railroad, Eddie Money, Ringo Starr (in as part of Beatles, but not as a solo artist even though the other Beatles are), REO Speedwagon, Steve Winwood, The Raspberries, Kansas, America,  The Black Crowes, ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), Peter Frampton, Pat Benatar, Duran Duran,  Loverboy, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Joe Cocker, The Cure, Dire Straits, Joan Jett, Chubby Checker, Bon Jovi, Johnny Rivers, Tommy James and the Shondells, Steve Miller Band, The Go-Go’s, The Bangles, Badfinger,  The Grass Roots, Styx, Foreigner, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Meatloaf, Jimmy Buffet, Huey Lewis & The News, Golden Earring,  B52s, The Monkees.

Try listening to any classic rock station and not hearing one of several great hits from each of these bands. It’s nearly impossible.

Which of these or other classic rock bands are your favorites that are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?  Chime in with your comments below.

I hope Chicago gets duly recognized soon.  I’d love to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame some day and see all the best artists of my favorite music. KISS made it this year after several years of being snubbed themselves, so I’m hopeful it will eventually happen for Chicago, but I’m not going to hold my breath that it will happen soon.  I’ve been disappointed in their omission for many years now.

In the meantime, if you want to support Chicago too and you are on Facebook, you can Like the Induct Chicago Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame page. Or, you can sign an online petition at

Someday the Rock and Roll HOF committee will have to acknowledge and recognize Chicago as one of the all time greats bands in Rock and Roll. When they do, they will  Make Me Smile.

The names of the 2015 Inductees have been released ( and they are Ringo Starr, The 5 Royales, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Green Day, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Lou Reed, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, and Bill Withers.

Are any of these more deserving than Chicago? I think not.

Bill Withers is most deserving, no doubt, and Ringo Starr and Joan Jett too can come off my list of those deserving recognition.

But Chicago and many other deserving bands are still waiting while several bands I’ve never even heard of are getting inducted.

When with the Rock Hall of Fame finally right their wrong?
