Sometimes A Good Bluff Pays Off

April 16, 2014

Many years ago my employer put a freeze on all performance reviews and raises. I couldn’t get them to give me either for over a year.

One interview I did go on during that period the hiring manager wanted to see my most recent performance review from that year, but I couldn’t give them one, so they did not offer me the job. I felt stuck.

So one day I requested a half day off work, and took the morning off, slept in late, then went to work in the afternoon wearing a suit and tie. Coworkers were asking me if I had an interview that morning and I sensed a buzz around the office about it. I just downplayed it and shrugged them off.

Late that very afternoon my boss asked if she could see me in private. I went into her office and she presented me with a performance review and announced that she was giving me a raise and a promotion.

Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Sneaky? Maybe.

Shrewd? You bet.

Always play your cards well, but sometimes a good bluff pays off.
