What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

December 18, 2012

Today, I’m 46 years old, unemployed and feeling obsolete.  But I have another 20 years or more to work, and need to figure out what it is I want to do when I grow up.  But even if I do, will I be able to?  Or will I be stuck doing something else?  Read on to find out.

Being independently wealthy and volunteering my time to good causes sounds like my ideal way to go, but I don’t see it happening unless you and tens of thousands of others discover Gift Idea Spark, my online gift idea porthole, and do your gift shopping online through there (it is possible! go there now and find something wonderful to gift to someone you love!).  Otherwise, I’ll probably have to find a more conventional way to make a living. But what to do?

Hey! Let’s discover our paths together!  Here are some links to assessments and information that helped me to explore my options.  Maybe it can help you explore your’s too!

Let’s start out by taking a Career Direction Inventory assessment.  Assessments examine: Interests,  Personality, Values, and Knowledge/Skills/Abilities.  What you learn about yourself can help you match you with careers that might be a good fit for you. You can take one at

On the Kiersey Temperament Sorter assessment (, my results indicated I am an Idealist Healer (INFP).  To learn more about this temperament, go to

My occupational interests are strong in Personal Service, Teaching/Social Services and Writing.  My work style is Persuasive.  No surprise here.  That’s why I blog here.  I can use my Writing and Persuasive interest and abilities to provide teaching and personal/social services to the public (this means you!).  This is important to me.

My workplace fit is Attentive (Server), Artistic (Creator), Social (Helper), and Enterprising (Persuader).  This means that I enjoy helping others, being creative, and being persuasive.

According to an assessment at, my top overall traits are Independence, Innovativeness, Interest in People, Preference for Structure and Self-Regulating.  Top traits for working with others were Independence, Consideration for Others, Takes Leadership, Influencing Others and Service Orientation. Top traits for work motivation include Interest In People, Preference for Structure, Interest in Things, Risk Tolerance and Drive. Top traits for Manages Work include Innovativeness, Learning and Problem Solving, and Organization. Top traits for Manages Self include Self-Regulating, Stress Tolerance, Reliability/Consistency, Recovery from Setbacks and Open to Change / Ambiguity.

My interest profile at indicated my primary interests are Social, Artistic and Enterprising.  This means I would like jobs in teaching, giving advice, helping people,   Jobs that fit these interests ( include Teachers, Trainers, Recreation Workers, Public Relations Specialists, Clergy, News Analysts, Counselors and Psychologists.

I found that these results were pretty accurate for me, what my interests were, where I felt I would enjoy working, and where I thought my gifts could make a difference and better our world.

Now it’s just a matter of exploring how I can segue into a career along these lines mid-career.  It won’t be easy as some of these careers require advanced degrees and licenses.  Going back to school at my age is not impossible, but would be a challenge.  Wish me luck.

For now, tomorrow I start a new job as a Senior Personal Lines Underwriter in the Property and Casualty Insurance industry.  This is where I have made a living for most of the last 20 years.   It’s not a perfect fit based on what I learned and know about myself, but I do get to help people, give advice, be persuasive, train and use similar skill sets in this line of work.

Maybe someday I’ll do something closer to my ideal job, but for now, like most of us, I’ll do what I gotta do to pay the bills.
