Winter Baseball

February 7, 2012

Yesterday, Canyon and I played Winter Baseball.

Winter Baseball is a long-standing annual tradition my brother-in-law Terry started about 20 years ago. One winter’s day, he and his buddies went to a nearby park in the middle of winter and took turns hitting the ball around to waiting fielders. It was such a good idea, they started to do it annually.

Pretty soon he had an event of it. Every Superbowl Sunday afternoon for many years now, his buddies get together to play baseball. Sometimes the weather is sunny and dry. Sometimes it is cloudy. Sometimes there is snowy. Sometimes it is icy. Sometimes it is bitterly cold. No matter the weather, the men head out and play to keep up the tradition. In the last couple years, some of the kids have joined us too.

This year the weather was pretty nice…sunny and 45 degrees. Here is a photo of Canyon and I at the event.

Last year, the weather was snowy with about a foot of snow on the ground. Here are a couple of images of us from last year.

After we play for an hour or so, the men go to a nearby bar for a few drinks, then head back to our host’s house to watch the Superbowl and enjoy some delicious snacks and food prepared by Terry’s wife, Cara (Thank you so much, Cara!).

It’s a wonderful tradition. I hope to play Winter Baseball with my kids for years to come. I hope I can play with their kids too. God willing, I’ll ride off into the Winter Baseball sunset of life.

Thank you, Uncle Terry! You have some great ideas and wonderful traditions. I appreciate you sharing them with us.
