Chicago Slaughter

May 17, 2009

With thanks to Matt Hunt of Hunt Insurance Group for sharing some free ticket vouchers with me, I took the kids to join 5500 others at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates Saturday night to see the Chicago Slaughter of the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) defeat the Wisconsin Wolfpack by a score of 67 to 22.  The victory kept their undefeated season in tact bringing them to 10-0.  The victory assured the Slaughter of home field advantage in the playoffs.  Only two away games remain in their regular season.

It was a fun, record setting and historic night.

The Slaughter dominated the Wolfpack throughout the game.  Newcomer WR Bobby Sippio caught 6 touchdown passes in the game and a total of 10 receptions for 144 yards.  WR Dontrell Jackson added eight receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown.  Most remarkably QB Russ Michna set 4 CIFL League records including most touchdowns thrown in a year (63), most passing yards in a season (2453), and most completions in a season (188). Michna’s 342 yards passing also broke his own record for most passing yards in a game.  The action also included an exciting kickoff return by one Slaughter player.

After the game, there was a ceremony to induct former Chicago Bear great Steve McMichael into the College Football Hall of Fame for his football achievements as a Texas Longhorn.  McMichael is currently the Head Coach of the Chicago Slaughter.  His former Bear teammates Jim McMahon, Gary Fencik and others attended the ceremony and shared stories of the honoree.

Immediately after the induction ceremony, the fans were permitted down onto the field to meet the players and get their autographs, and the kids and I took advantage of the opportunity and headed down to the turf.  We looked for, and found, record-setting QB Russ Michna and had him sign our tickets.  I also got some pictures of the kids with Russ.  Then, we found Sargent Slaughter, the Slaughter team mascot, and Canyon got his autograph and I got a picture of him with Canyon and Tess.

All in all it was a fun night we’ll always remember.  Thanks, Matt!
